HISTORY

The Knanaya Catholic in Tracy, CA has been part of St. Mary’s Forane Parish San Jose. Because of distance to travel, the Knanaya Catholics in Tracy wished to have Holy Mass also in Tracy. Under the initiative of Vicar General Fr. Thomas Mulavanal and vicar Fr. Mathew Meledath, the community got written permission from Most Rev. Stephen E. Blaire, Bishop of Stockton and of Mar Jacob Angadiath to start monthly Holy Mass for the Knanaya Catholic community at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Tracy, CA.

Vicar General Fr. Thomas Mulavanal inaugurated the mission and celebrated the first Holy Mass at St. Bernard Catholic Parish in Tracy on July 23, 2017. Mar Jacob Angadiath appointed Fr. Mathew Meledath as the first mission director. Fr. Saji Pinarkayil, the pastor of St. Mary’s Forane Parish of San Jose was appointed as the director of the mission from May 1, 2018. Mar Joy Alappatt replaced Fr. Saji Pinarkayil with Fr. Jemy Puthusseril with effect from September 15, 2023.

This mission serves around 59 Knanaya Catholic families living in and around Tracy in the State of California.

TIMELINE

2017 July 23: Fr. Thomas Mulavanal inaugurated the mission with Fr. Mathew Meledath as the director.

2018 May 1: Fr. Saji Pinarkayil was appointed as the mission director.

2022 October 25: Bishop Mar Joy Alappatt gave permission to name this mission as St. Joseph’s Knanaya Catholic Mission, Tracy (prot.no.5118/2022)

2022 November 19: Mar Joseph Pandarasseril celebrated mass here along with Msgr. Thomas Mulavanal, Fr. Stany Edathiparambill and Fr. Saji Pinarkayil.

2023 September 15: Fr. Jemy Puthusseril took charge as the mission director.
