HISTORY
With the support of Knanaya Catholic Association of South Florida
(KCASF), Vicar General and Region Director Fr. Abraham Mutholath offered
Holy Mass and made a presentation on the relevance of establishing
Knanaya Catholic Mission in Miami. After much discussion and
clarification, the meeting agreed to apply to Mar Jacob Angadiath for
the establishment of the mission. Fr. Mutholath sought the help of Fr.
George Pakkuvettithara who is a Knanaya priest serving in the
Archdiocese of Miami to help with the pastoral service of the mission.
Fr. George was generous to help the community until we could get a
Knanaya priest from Kottayam.
Mar Jacob Angadiath established the mission on July 21, 2007 with Fr.
George Pakkuvettithara as the director in charge. Later Mar Angadiath
appointed Fr. Stephen Vettuvelil as the director of the mission on
September 13, 2009. Fr. Jemy Puthusseril was the mission director from
March 10, 2013. Fr. Jose Adoppallil was appointed as the mission
director from October 18, 2014.
Under the leadership of Fr. Jose Adoppallil,
the mission bought a church from the Archdiocese of Miami at 1105 NW 6th
Ave., Fort Lauderdale. The church was consecrated on Sunday, May 31,
2015 by His Excellency Mar Jacob Angadiath. His Grace Mar Mathew
Moolakkatt, and His Grace Most Rev. Bishop Thomas Wensky, Archbishop of
Miami were concelebrants. Mar Jacob Angadiath elevated this mission as a
parish on the same day with Fr. Jose Adoppallil as its first pastor. His
Grace Mar Mathew Moolakkatt inaugurated the new church in the meeting
that followed.
Fr. Suni Padinjarekkara served as the pastor of
this parish on December 15, 2015 to April 30, 2018. Fr. Joseph
Sauriamakil was pastor from May 1, 2018 to August 18, 2020. Fr. Jose
Chirappurath was appointed as the pastor from August 18, 2020. This
parish serves around 85 Knanaya Catholic families living in South
Florida.
